About SKUD

SKUD is made up of local residents and other interested individuals. Their aim is to have reasoned development of the South Kensington Tube Station site.

We do not oppose improvements to South Kensington Station.

What we do oppose is using minor improvements necessary to the Underground station as an excuse for a massive commercial development which will profit no-one except the developers.

Also, any development of the site needs to be handled sensitively because of its historic nature.

Guidelines for the future:

• SKUD suggests that the unique character of the South Kensington village must be preserved, with no major office and retail development.
• Station improvements must be sympathetic to the historic charm of the station, enjoyed by so many visitors.
• The residential roads around the site cannot carry heavy traffic – and must be protected.
• Residents are entitled to enjoy the natural daylight and sunlight of their properties, without this being blocked by over-development.
• Precious 19th century houses and facades should be protected from unnecessary demolition.
• Local retailers, established in the area for years, are an asset and not to be put unnecessarily out of business.
• The South Kensington skyline, with its magnificent views of the architecture of the museums, is in itself a national treasure.
• Too many parts of London - Hammersmith Broadway for instance - have been blighted by insensitive development. What is lost can never be recovered. If new construction is needed, let's have distingushed buildings erected.
